Mint Julep

I really like bourbon. Blanton’s, Bookers, and Pappy Van Winkle just to name a few. I also really like a mint julep in an ice cold silver mint julep cup. I know it is not the best way to consume good bourbon, but it is quintessentially southern, and I feel like whistling Dixie when I have a mint julep in hand. This is a wonderful recipe to use when having a group of friends over to lounge on your porch for a lazy afternoon, or to serve at your next Kentucky Derby party.

Ingredients:

  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 ounce bourbon whiskey, Pappy Van Winkle Special Reserve preferred

Preparation:

  1. Combine fresh mint, water and sugar and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Allow mint simple syrup to cool.
  2. Fill 4 glasses with crushed ice then divide the Bourbon among the glasses. Add 1/8 cup of syrup to each glass. For the faint of heart you can add a splash of soda to tame it bit.
