Serious Chocolate Shake

I love milkshakes, and when my husband got wind of the news that I was going to be sent a copy of Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes by Adam Reid, he was elated. He often talks of his fondness for Awful-Awful where he fell in love with “the best milkshakes ever”, when visiting Newport, Rhode Island. A few years ago we took the kids there, and of course tried the tasty treat for ourselves. They were great!

Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes is an entire book about milkshakes, and is the perfect guide for getting creative in the kitchen. Author and ice cream enthusiast Adam Ried takes you from the classics to gourmet twists in just a few easy steps, and you can begin blending with abandon!

The book is divided into sections from Basic Shakes, Vanilla, Chocolate, Teas & Coffees, Fruity, Unconventional, and Afar, with an International flair. Adam Ried also shares information on ice-cream scoops, blenders and trivia.

I chose to make the Serious Chocolate Shake, which Adam describes as the S**##! He explains ” There is nothing timid about the flavor here-it is chocolate down to its very last corpuscle, just the way I like it!”

 Serious Chocolate Shake

Makes 3 1/2 cups

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cold whole or lowfat milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 medium scoops good chocolate ice cream, softened till just melty at the edges
  • 4 medium scoops chocolate sorbet, softened till just melty at the edges
Preparation:
  • Place all ingredients in a blender, and pulse several times.
  • With the blender off mash the ice cream mixture down into the blades with a flexible spatula.
  • Continue pulsing, stopping, and mashing till mixture is well blended and can be removed easily from the blender 30-90 seconds.
  • Remove and serve immediately in chilled glasses.
Extra Rich Variation:

Substitute cold half & half or heavy cream for the milk.

Malted Variation:

Add 2 Tablespoons of malted powder to the blender with the vanilla and milk before adding the ice cream and sorbet.

This is a Serious Chocolate Shake!
